“Compassion in Action: Supporting Students Facing Housing Insecurity” offers an in-depth look into the daily life of Lluviana Mendoza, a dedicated McKinney-Vento liaison in Washington state. Through unpredictable, sometimes chaotic days filled with unwavering commitment, Lluviana provides critical support to students and families experiencing homelessness. Through her tireless efforts, Lluviana builds meaningful relationships, fosters confidence in students, and brings hope to families in need. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of empathy, advocacy, and the unwavering belief in every child’s potential to succeed. According to the National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE), 1.37 million students nationwide experienced homelessness in 2022-23. More than 110,000 students in homeless situations are unaccompanied, meaning they are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian, with 76% of students in shared housing due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason, data from NCHE shows in 2021-22.
