Shanghai is undergoing a momentous transformation, marked most evidently by large-scale construction and the razing of its older and poorer neighbourhoods. New schools and cultural centres, skyscrapers and condominium complexes are quickly rising up where Shanghai’s historical Old City once stood.
In CHAI, our second improvisational film, we follow a man whose job is to remove the debris from recently demolished homes. His own home has itself been recently condemned. As like so many of his neighbours, he must now contemplate his place within the new Shanghai emerging around him.
